How many teenagers in Western society ask all of those questions right from the start of a relationship they already established? Probably none. It doesn't end there of course, but that's the first step. Within the first day of a traditional get-together between the families you will have gleaned all of these things and gotten a good glimpse of what this person is about. Questions regarding ambitions, religion, career goals, thoughts on children, travelling, hobbies, etc. When you are sitting with someone you don't know very well and are trying to evaluate them as a future spouse, you are less inclined to making small talk (and you shouldn't) and more inclined to ask objective questions. Having family to consult with through this process is very important, because everyone has their own perspective and it will help you come to a more objective conclusion. If you haven't had the opportunity to be alone with this person yet, then you are preventing emotional and subjective judgment and allowing more objective judgment of the person in front of you. What this accomplishes first of all is that it pressures both parties to seriously think about the implications of marriage and the spouse that they are choosing. In Islam when you approach someone for marriage, you have to immediately introduce family into both sides of the equation. I think going about marriage in the traditional manner can heavily reduce the divorce-rate in the long-run.

And they keep fighting through a broken relationship despite the problems that could have been prevented right from the start.

I've seen plenty of instances where couples get together primarily due to physical attraction, and then once they've invested themselves emotionally they struggle to ignore the flaws and incompatibilities between them because they're in love. In Islam, one of the purposes of forbidding premarital relationships is to prevent social problems arising from premature love syndrome (I made this phrase up) when two people think they're in love just because they exchanged a few words and are physically attracted to each other.

I will try to explain in a nutshell, what I believe Islam's concept of marriage seeks to accomplish, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
